April Ross

April Ross was one of only a few women beach volleyball stars who won medals at more than one Olympics. Ross will compete in Tokyo for her 3rd Olympic medal alongside Alix Klineman who is a first time Olympian. Ross is also hoping to win her very first Olympic gold. As she is 39 and has a long way to go, this could be her final chance. But she's still convinced of winning top awards. Ross stated via NBC Boston: "If we do our best and even if we just play well, I think we could be able to win gold." Also, it's a matter of chance. Ross was born in 1982, and grew up in Costa Mesa California with her siblings and parents, started participating in the sports of the Newport Harbor High School. While at Newport Harbor High School, she competed in numerous sports. The prep sports she played included indoor volleyball as well as basketball, track and running. However she was clearly an edge over the other players in this latter game. Based on her bio, she was a middle blocker and an outside volleyball player throughout her time in high school. She was named the Gatorade National Circle of Champions Player of the year in 1999, for her performance. Also, in 2000 she was awarded the Orange County Athlete of the Year for volleyball. Ross and Klineman might be working on a project in the year 2017, however Ross had already been a seasoned athlete at the beach prior to when they teamed up. In fact, she won several major championships while playing with two different partners, one of which is a volleyball icon. From 2007 until 2013 she was in a partnership with Jennifer Kessy, who is the coach she is currently. Kessy as well as Ross proved to be a formidable force in the international arena, taking home the world championship in 2009 as a team. The duo eventually captured a silver medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Misty May Treanor and Kerri Jennings the legendary team who won the 2012 Olympic Games in London, beat their opponents to claim the gold. Ross was Walsh Jennings new partner after May-Treanor's resignation. They both won beach volleyball bronze for the Rio Olympics in the year 2016. Ross was a Trojans player for the USC during her college days, years before becoming a professional. Her time at USC was a memorable one. When she was a freshman in 2000 the Trojans' performance earned her the Pac-10 as well as NCAA the Freshman of the Year award. Additionally, she was an integral player for helping the Trojans reach their way to the Final Four. In her sophomore season she suffered a devastating personal loss, yet earned the distinction of being an All-American. In her two final years with the Trojans she was instrumental in helping them to win two consecutive titles. As an individual she established herself in the history books by winning the Honda Sports Award for 2003-04. This award was given to the most outstanding female college volleyball players across the nation. Ross was an international relations major at USC. Margie Ross, Ross' mother, was never given the chance to watch her daughter become an international beach volleyball star. Margie, Ross's mother, passed away in 2001 when Ross was an USC sophomore. She had breast cancer. In the aftermath, Ross is still close to her parent who died. Margie has always been a source of inspiration to her on and off the beach.
